Get the Proper Training

When it comes to Concealed carry training, requirements vary by state. Many states mandate training before you can carry. For a list of laws and requirements by state, visit OnlineCarryTraining.com. To be 100% sure you know the current requirements and permits needed, look up your specific state. If you plan to carry outside your state of residence, you will also need to know which states allow concealed carry and which states honor your state’s permits. Thirty seven states honor a Kansas permit.

Across the country, there are a variety of training classes available that meet the minimum requirements for a license. That’s not always to best choice. Make sure you sign up for a reputable class that properly prepares you for carrying and operating a gun. For example, the state of Kansas requires an 8 hour course with 6 1/2 hours of classroom time and 1 ½ hours of range time. Look for the following topics: Introduction to handguns, safe handling and storage of firearms, firearms care and maintenance, legal issues relating to the use of deadly force, use of deadly force, preparedness for confrontations, firearms manipulation, marksmanship, and practice.

Wear proper clothing

The main reason you need to be aware of wearing the proper clothing if you are going to carry a concealed gun is to keep your gun from being exposed or “printing.” Make sure the clothing you are wearing is suited for the gun you are carrying. Wearing shirts that are too small is a sure way to expose the fact you are carrying a gun. Wearing clothing that is too short, meaning it pulls up when you bend over or reach for something, will certainly put you in a position of exposing your gun. Darker clothing tends to conceal better than lighter clothing. Be very conscious of how you look and whether or not you are truly concealed. Get a second opinion before you leave your home. Take your time. Allow time.

After you carry for a while, you need to be sure you have a routine for keeping you gun hidden. Complacency can get you into trouble if you don’t keep to your routine.

Purchase a Quality Holster

The last thing you want is your gun falling out of its holster. Make sure you purchase a quality holster that keeps your gun in place and is comfortable to wear every day. Try multiple holsters and experiment with the one you like best to make sure it fits your lifestyle and your body type. You don’t have to purchase an expensive holster to find a great one.

Practice with Your Ammo of Choice

Make sure you take the time to practice with the ammo brand you have purchased. You may want to experiment with several brands or types. Failure to do so could result in your ammo not feeding correctly with your gun. You want to make sure you discover any issues before you are ever put into a position to defend yourself.

Understand Firearm Laws

As mentioned earlier, there are many resources you can use to research and learn all of the laws in your state and other states if you plan to travel. We’re not just talking about your gun permit and concealed carry laws. If you are in a situation, and must stand your ground, you might be in a retreat state and could violate the law if you stand your ground. Know the laws in your state and take the time to look up the laws in the state or states you are traveling in.
